If you’re a fan of our “Old Baseball Cards” series, then you know in almost every episode of the series, you’ve seen Hall of Fame pitcher Randy Johnson. In the intro, Scott Boras says, “My God, you’ve got a Randy Johnson.
Well, baseball fans, this week I have only this to tell you: My God, we’ve got a Randy Johnson. As in the real one.
The Big Unit is this week’s guest on our baseball nostalgia show, where we open up old packs of cards from the ’80s and ’90s. I gave Johnson, now a special assistant to the president and CEO of the Arizona Diamondbacks, a pack of the famous 1989 Upper Deck, which contains his rookie card and Ken Griffey Jr.’s, but spoiler alert, we didn’t find either.
We did, however, get some cards that led to great stories. Like when he found the guy who made the final out of his first no-hitter. Or about riding the bus with Larry Walker in the minor leagues. Or taking a picture with Wade Boggs. It’s a fantastic episode with a legendary player.
If you’re new to this series, then welcome and we hope you enjoy it. Each week, I open a pack of old baseball cards with an MLB player, coach or famous fan. The cards aren’t worth much these days — except those 89 Upper Deck — so instead, we use them as muses for storytelling. If you dig the show, we’ve got plenty of great episodes below.
